Abu Dhabi's climate does not treat every pool the same way. Intense UV, sustained summer heat and heavy year-round use create specific, predictable problems: chlorine that disappears faster than expected, water that turns cloudy or green within days, hairline cracks that show up years after handover, and equipment that wears out sooner than it should. None of this is bad luck. It is what happens when a pool is designed and built without accounting for the environment it actually lives in. Understanding these mechanisms is the difference between a pool that ages well for a decade and one that becomes a recurring source of frustration.

Why Abu Dhabi pools turn green: algae and chlorine

Algae is the complaint most villa owners recognise first, and its cause here is almost always the same. Chlorine is the sanitiser that keeps algae spores from taking hold, but chlorine is not a stable compound under strong sunlight. In Abu Dhabi's intense UV and heat, free chlorine breaks down far faster than it does in milder climates. The moment the level drops below what the water needs, algae has an opening, and once it establishes it can turn a pool cloudy or visibly green within a couple of days.

Three habits prevent most of this. A stabiliser, cyanuric acid, slows how quickly UV degrades chlorine, so the sanitiser lasts longer between doses. Regular water testing catches a falling chlorine level before it drops low enough for algae to start, rather than after the water has already turned. And shocking the pool, a stronger-than-usual chlorine dose, during the peak heat of summer is a standard preventive step here, not a sign that something has gone wrong. Skip any one of these and Abu Dhabi's sun will find the gap.

Chlorine breaks down fast in direct sun

It is worth separating this from the algae point, because it is really the cause behind it. Unstabilised chlorine can break down within hours of direct exposure to strong summer UV. That is a different order of problem than in a temperate climate, where the same chlorine dose might hold for a full day. Pools built here need either a properly stabilised chlorine programme or a more consistent sanitising approach designed for sustained heat, not a routine copied from a cooler market. Getting this balance wrong is the single most common reason a well-built pool still struggles with water clarity.

Structural cracking in concrete pool shells

Water chemistry is not the only thing this climate tests. A conventional pool is built as a rigid concrete shell, and over years that rigidity becomes a liability. Ground movement beneath the shell and the thermal expansion and contraction that come with Abu Dhabi's extreme daily heat swings put real, ongoing stress on a structure that cannot flex. Over time this can lead to hairline cracking, particularly around corners, steps and areas where the shell meets fittings. This is not a claim that every concrete pool fails. It is a physically grounded mechanism, one that professional engineering and correct construction detailing manage well, but one that a rigid structure is inherently more exposed to in this climate than in a milder one.

Without regular servicing, that combination ages pumps, filters and automation faster than manufacturers' milder-climate benchmarks suggest. UV also does its own quiet damage beyond the water itself, fading and degrading plastics, seals and equipment housings over years in a way that simply does not happen at the same rate in a temperate market. A servicing schedule built for this climate, not a generic one, is what keeps equipment lasting as long as it should.

Fading and degrading finishes

The same UV load that stresses chlorine and equipment reaches every exposed surface around the pool. Coping, decking, plaster and painted or coated finishes all fade and weather faster under Abu Dhabi sun than they would in a milder climate, and poor-quality materials or shortcuts in sealing show that ageing within a couple of seasons rather than a decade. Choosing finishes rated for sustained heat and UV, and maintaining the sealing schedule they need, is what keeps a pool looking like it did on handover day rather than visibly tired within a few summers.
